  • Peaceful, family-run site on a working farm in rural Shropshire
  • A 10-minute drive from the Shropshire Hills; 15 minutes from Welshpool
  • Guided tours of the farm and stables; barbecues welcome on site
Thinking about spending your holiday in the sloping countryside and filling your days with hiking and heaps of family days out? Then you may like to head to Long Mountain Centre, a family-run site just 10 minutes' drive away from the edge of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. This is a properly rural spot where the owners can take you on a guided tour of the working farm and stables. If you ask them, they'll also arrange a meet-and-greet and feeding with the horses and chickens. Those who want to bring their horses on holiday can also bring them to the holiday livery for an additional fee (be sure to add this as an extra when you book). Out and about, there's plenty to do in and around the local towns of Welshpool and Shrewsbury, which are both within 20 minutes' drive of Long Mountain Centre. Castles and gardens are a short drive away, as is the steam-driven Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. Back at base, facilities are kept simple to maintain the site's peaceful rural vibe; the site has toilets for guests' use. It’s a 20-minute drive to the nearest pubs, restaurants and shops so a good idea for easy feasts is to light up a barbecue and get set for a sausage sizzle under the night sky.

2 bedroom cabin

Liked: Had a wonderful stay at this lovely cabin, the views are outstanding with ponies right in front of the cabin which made it much more exciting for kids and myself, would highly recommend. Very quiet and peaceful.

Disliked: Lots of flies everywhere which is expected being by stables but we didn’t let it ruin our stay

2 bedroom cabin

Liked: Location great with fantastic views. Quiet and surrounded by lovely countryside.

Spacious cabin, good layout. Good amount of space between cabins so you were not aware of what the neighbours were going.

Lovely touches such as the eggs on arrival as well as milk.

Route directions

From the A5, take the B4386 Montgomery road. Once you've passed through Westbury, take the first right, signed Rowley/Wallop (take care when driving up the hill as some of the road is single track only). After about four miles is a crossroads with a phone box on the right and a church on the left – carry on past these and the site is on the left, over a cattle grid.

Local attractions

It's a short drive from the site to the walking trails of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. Those who are into watersports may prefer to paddle your way down the river Severn in a kayak. And if all of that sounds a bit too active, perhaps settle for a more peaceful day of fishing at Spring Lea (20 minutes' drive). A castle visit is a cracking idea too – head into Welshpool (20 minutes) for a tour of the huge medieval Powis Castle and its gorgeous gardens or make your way to the ruins of Castell Dolforwyn (half an hour) or Montgomery Castle (20 minutes). Shrewsbury and Welshpool are both around a 20-minute drive away for urban amenities, and surrounded by great places for days out: head a little out of Shrewsbury for Attingham Park (half an hour), Wroxeter Roman Vineyard (half an hour) and a couple of falconry centres, or trundle over to Welshpool (15 minutes) for a scenic steam-powered ride on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway.
