  • Eco-conscious site by the Tarn river a kilometre from Ispagnac
  • On the edge of the Cévennes National Park, an hour from Gorges du Tarn
  • A short stroll to the local village shops and restaurants
Watersports, hikes and canyoning… three magic words that might be enough on their own to send you scampering along to Camping de L’Aiguebelle, a rural Lozère site on the edge of the Cévennes National Park. But there’s more: ice cream is on offer throughout the day at the site bar, along with cool drinks if that’s more your thing, to be consumed as you lounge by the pool (just next to the bar to minimise melting time…) or take a stroll by the Tarn river, which runs 100 metres away from the site. Easy strolls will also get you down to the local village, Ispagnac, where shops and eateries are just over a kilometre away along quiet footpaths. This is a nifty spot for getting out to the area’s various activities – watersports, hikes and canyoning can all be had nearby, and within an hour's drive are caves, animal parks, the Cevennes steam train and the Gorges du Tarn. Being just on the edge of a national park, it’s also a mighty pretty place, and the folk here are doing their part to preserve the special surrounds by using eco-friendly products and installing a phyto-purification system to deal with waste.

Electric optional grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Electric optional grass and earth touring pitch

Liked: Gorgeous, quaint little campsite in a stunning mountain location. The faculties are dated, but spotlessly clean. The pool was a lovely sun trap. All the other campers were polite, respectful people. The man running it was accommodating and made a huge effort with speaking English (which was a relief as my French is appalling).

Electric optional grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Quiet site, composts waste. Owner trying to turn it into an eco site. Reed bed for camper van effluent. Owner speaks English.

Pizza van on site. Did not use as unsure of opening times so bought food. Would have if we had known it was open (told was closed).

Disliked: Laundry and dishwashing areas need a good clean.

Reception hours on PitchUp wrong. Closed until 3pm, we wouldn’t have arrived at 2pm if we had known.

Local attractions

It’s highly likely that those gorgeous surrounds will tempt you out for a closer look with some fresh-air activities, and there are plenty to pick from. Hikes and mountain bike rides for all abilities can be accessed nearby, including a 12-kilometre jaunt that starts just outside the site. Something else in mind? Have a chat with site staff who can put you in touch with folk who run canyoning, caving, paragliding and via ferrata climbing days, or spectacular days of canoeing/kayaking through the Gorges du Tarn (an hour's drive away). The Cévennes Evasion adventure park is 10 minutes’ drive away for those who’d like to take a view from up in the treetops. Back down at ground level, there are stunning caves to see at Aven Armand (50 minutes’ drive) and Dargilan (just over an hour), native beasts to meet at the Gévaudan Wolf Park (50 minutes) and a fab art/nature/amusement park at Le Vallon du Villaret (50 minutes). The Cevennes steam train is around an hour’s drive away for those who’d like to chug gently through the scenery.
