  • Welcoming Campania site with stunning views of Vesuvius
  • Pompeii 15 minutes’ walk; Herculaneum and Naples half an hour’s drive
  • Family pizzeria, mini-market and bar less than five minutes’ walk away
What a spectacular location for an outdoor stay in the Campania area. Take a quick look at the pics and you’ll see that this place has some rather incredible views from its pitches – yes, indeed, that’s Mount Vesuvius that forms the backdrop for your stay at La Terrazza di Hermès. Sitting and gazing at mainland Europe’s only active volcano is likely to fill a fair number of your hours here, but it’s also possible to head over to the surrounding national park to follow the trail up to the crater, or – for a truly memorable experience – organise a helicopter trip right from your pitch. That on its own is a pretty huge selling point – but actually it’s not the only world-class attraction around here. The Archaeological Park of Pompeii is a mere 15 minutes’ walk away too, making it easy for guests here to be the first ones to arrive in the morning to explore the well-preserved Roman ruins. Beyond both of those, you can also schedule outings to Naples and Sorrento, or head to the nearest beach on the Gulf of Naples (the coast is about 10 minutes’ drive away). A railway station is roughly 10 minutes’ walk away, with services on the Circumvesuviana line allowing for easy car-free travels to Naples or Sorrento. Also handily close by are a mini-market, a bar and a pizzeria (all within a couple of minutes’ stroll). The site’s own facilities include hot showers, washing machines and a playground, along with plenty of tourist info to help you make the most of this fabulous area.

Liked: Seemed well organised for camping, liked that we actually camping in grass which is nice, and camping with car was allowed.
The toilets were nice and clean.

Disliked: no hot water unless you paid with coins, so wasn't just paying for shower, you had to wash dishes on cold water, was no soap on the toilets.

Local attractions

The Archaeological Park of Pompeii (15 minutes’ walk) must of course be your first port of call. The city was famously buried in ash when Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, and it’s now one of the world’s best-preserved Roman ruins, with amphitheatres, baths, temples, colourful villas and lots more to see. Vesuvius itself (10 minutes’ drive) is well worth a visit as well. Vesuvius National Park has 11 different marked trails to follow, including the Gran Cono trail that takes you up to the crater. For more of the area’s history, head on to the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum (half an hour) or check out La Trinità della Cava (35 minutes), a Benedictine abbey in the woods. For some seaside time, top picks include Torre del Greco (25 minutes), Castellammare di Stabia (25 minutes) or classy Sorrento (55 minutes). The museums, catacombs and Ovo Castle in Naples (half an hour) should be on the menu too – and of course a slice of pizza in the place that invented it.
