Set along a waterway between Sneek and Heeg, two lively watersports hubs, Koekoek en de Waard is a small-scale site that should have you feeling cosy in no time. Right on the waterfront in IJlst, it has mooring for boats, and alternatively, you’re welcome to launch a boat from the harbour. Even if you’re not bringing a boat, the on-site dock makes a nice place for a swim or watching the boats pass by.
Bring your bicycle to this site too: it’s a scenic 15-minute cycle away from Sneek, in a gorgeous area for cycling and on Friesland’s Eleven Cities cycling route. If you’re boating around instead, don’t be afraid to ask the team for route and destination recommendations. Those who don't have their own boat can arrange boat tours in either IJlst or Sneek.
IJlst also has plenty of its own attractions. Just 100 metres away is Houtstad IJlst, a museum about the shipbuilding and wood industries. The De Rat working sawmill is two minutes’ walk away from the site. Plus, just across the street, the ‘overtuinen’ (meaning ‘front gardens’) also provide a lovely green space for activities. A supermarket is 150 metres away, and restaurants are within walking distance of the site too.
Koekoek en de Waard has a variety of green plants and a small marquee serving as a communal space with picnic tables, a bar and two refrigerators for guests to use. There is also an amenities building with two separate shower areas and two toilet areas, and a washing machine that guests can use to do their laundry.
