  • Quiet family campsite 15 minutes’ walk from Villefranche-de-Rouergue
  • Five minutes’ walk to fishing on the Aveyron River and Aqualudis pool
  • Playground; breakfast service, terrace bar and snacks in high season
If you’re looking to combine a no-fuss camping break in the Aveyron with lots of active things to do and the chance to ingest a bit of culture, Camping Onlycamp du Rouergue has got you covered in all three cases. With simple facilities to keep families comfy, this neatly landscaped site is five minutes’ walk from trout fishing, canoe and kayak hire on the Aveyron River or the swimming pool at Aqualudis (you get a free entry per day, per site guest). Nearby you can get a dose of medieval heritage in the spectacular, 13th-century Bastide town of Villefranche-de-Rouergue (15 minutes’ walk). And what about those on-site facilities? Neatly landscaped pitches, some shaded by trees; a laundry service to keep everyone neat and shiny; a play area for the kids. In summer, things ramp up a bit, with breakfast pastries and breads (order the preceding day) and a snack bar serving ice creams, cold drinks and coffee all day long. And after a busy day splashing around in the river or exploring the cobbled streets of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, you can kick back on the bar terrace with a glass of something chilled in hand.

From the manager: Madame, Monsieur,

Cordialement,

Christine, Yves, Donovan

Local attractions

Fishing folk, it’s five minutes’ stroll to the banks of the Aveyron River. If you’re after more fishy challenges, the entire department of Aveyron is an angler’s paradise, with a multitude of lakes and wild rivers where you can catch pike, carp, zander and wild trout. To learn more about local heritage, take a guided night-time tour of the Gothic-era Monastery of the Chartreuse St Sauveur (half an hour’s walk, the kids might enjoy solving the mystery of the disappearing relic with the help of interactive clues). Chances are they will also adore the chance to scale the steep cobbled streets of Najac (20 minutes’ drive) to the striking ruins of its medieval castle. Closer to base camp, Villefranche-de-Rouergue (15 minutes’ walk) has plenty to offer historians, from tours of its vaulted Collégiale Notre Dame church and ornate baroque chapels to walks along the river to admire its mellow stone buildings. For a taster of the present-day town, browse colourful produce markets (Thursday, Saturday, Sunday mornings, plus a night market on Sunday), have a potter around artisan shops (chocolatiers should please the kids) and chill awhile in one of many riverside cafés.
