Making for the mountains of Morocco? Complexe Touristique Tahla Garden makes a cracking place to settle for a taste of rural life as you travel the road between Fes and Taza (both of which are around an hour’s drive away, making them close enough for day trips).
Stunning views are all around, of course, but this is the place to come if you’d like to delve a little deeper into local life. All manner of activities are laid on here for guests: taste the wares of local producers, learn to bake bread in a traditional earth oven or head to the traditional Caïdale tent to watch shows of traditional music and dance, perhaps.
The friendly folks on site also set up various excursions, taking pic-snappers out to the finest viewpoints and guiding guests through the surrounding countryside for glimpses into farming life and visits to some of the caves that lurk below the craggy skyline of the Tazekka National Park.
It’s not all full-on activity around here though – the outdoor pool may host water aerobics sessions but it’s also a rather fine place for some full-on lounging, with a playground nearby for any nippers who don’t share your enthusiasm for remaining horizontal. And whether you crammed your day full or shunned all action, you’ll still be welcome at the restaurant of an evening to feast on tasty traditional fare.

Lokalne atrakcje
If you fancy heading out for a ramble under your own steam, it’ll take you half an hour or so to drive to the Tazekka National Park. Suggested hikes in the hills here (detailed on maps and info boards) range from gentle strolls of a kilometre or so through to a more challenging 17-kilometre route. Keep your eyes open for Barbary deer, wild pigs and bats as you explore.
One of the park’s top spots is the Gouffre de Friouato – the largest cave system in north Africa is around an hour and a half’s drive from the site. Climb down a ladder to enter the main cavern or join a spelunking tour to crawl deeper into the caves and visit underground lakes.
For urban wanderings and souk shopping the ancient city of Fes is around an hour away by car. Getting lost in the medina here is almost inevitable (it is the world’s largest car-free urban area, after all) but there’s much to see, buy and eat at every twist of the lane.
