If it’s adventure you’re after, set your compass to point you in the direction of Alaska Canoe and Campground in Sterling, western Alaska. It's on the Kenai peninsula, close to prime spots for hiking, fishing and canoeing, and you won’t need to look outside the site to get started – the team will help you arrange everything.
Here for the fishing? Rent your tackle from Alaska Canoe and climb aboard a charter (from Homer, Deep Creek or Seward) to seek out halibut – keep your eyes peeled for sea lions, otters and even whales while you’re out on the boat – or try your luck on the Kenai or Kasilof rivers for king salmon, then have your fish cleaned, frozen and vacuum packed before you leave.
Want to explore the Alaskan wilderness? Venture into Kenai National Wildlife Refuge with some sturdy boots, or with a canoe, kayak or raft in tow (rent them when you arrive) – the refuge is full of rivers and lakes, and there’s a shuttle service to bring you (plus equipment) from home base to the best spots. If that still sounds like too much work, sign up for a bear-spotting flyout trip, taking to the skies over the refuge to spy out some grizzlies and black bears.
You’ll work up an appetite fairly quickly round these parts, so when you’re ready for some munch make your way back to Alaska Canoe to get the barbecue started (throw on some of your freshly caught fish if you’ve had a good day on the water), or try out one of the restaurants in Sterling or Soldotna (10 minutes away).

Haven’t had enough of fab and scenic Alaskan nature? Travel on to Kenai Fjords National Park, an hour and a half’s drive from base, for hiking and boat tours through spectacular mountains and glaciers.
If you need a break from excursions on the wild Alaskan land and sea, there are plenty of more sedate destinations around here to explore. Start with a visit to the small city of Soldotna for the Historical Society and Museum, Alaska Berries winery, Kenai River Brewing Company and the Town of Living Trees (a chainsaw-carving studio that’s an absolute must), before continuing on to the coastal city of Kenai (30 minutes) to poke around the old town and take in the views over Cook Inlet from the sandy beaches.
Craving some more Alaskan booze? Make your way to Homer, an hour and a half away, for the Bear Creek Winery, Homer Brewing Company and Grace Ridge Brewery, then stick around for the Kilcher Homestead Living Museum (learn about the self-sufficient lifestyle of early pioneers), Miller Comb Museum, Salty Dawg Saloon and tons of galleries.
