- Peaceful Abruzzo campsite five minutes’ drive from Prata d’Ansidonia
- L’Aquila 35 minutes’ drive and Campo Imperatore 55 minutes
- Spectacular Altopiano di Navelli views; on-site shop, bar and pizzeria
With views to the forested mountains of the Altopiano di Navelli from the pitches – plus peace and quiet in abundance – Abruzzo’s Camping 7 Fonti is an excellent choice for a laid-back rural getaway, with or without the kids.
The site has all sorts of handy features to keep you nicely rested and relaxed; as well as fully-serviced pitches with car parking nearby, guests have use of accessible modern bathrooms with plenty of hot water for those all-important showers.
In reception there is a small bar as well as a grocery store for stocking up on basics and local specialities – you can order meat in advance and get cooking on the communal barbecue. If you’d rather swerve the self-catering, there’s a lively restaurant-pub-pizzeria a few steps from the pitches that’s open every evening, with occasional live music or DJ sets to keep you on your toes after dark. There are also a couple of bars and osterias in Prata d’Ansidonia (five minutes’ drive).
Activities-wise, there’s a play area for younger kids and an extensive games field with five-a-side football and volleyball pitches. If you’d care to explore the Abruzzo region under pedal power, there are plenty of cycle paths leading off onto the spectacular Altopiano di Navelli foothills (45 minutes by bike).

Local attractions
Local sightseeing might start up on the spectacular Campo Imperatore (55 minutes’ drive); Abruzzo’s highest alpine meadow is ringed by mountain peaks and dotted with pristine lakes. It’s heaven for hikers, and if you’re keen on stargazing, stay on after dark on a cloudless evening and watch the Milky Way dancing across the sky, or glimpse the galaxy up close through the telescope at Campo Imperatore Observatory (also 55 minutes).
As well as being a dramatically beautiful landscape for walkers and cyclists, the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga (15 minutes) is home to several landmark castle ruins. The 10th-century Rocca Calascio (25 minutes) dominates the scenery from its mountaintop eyrie; scramble up to the ruined ramparts for breathtaking views over the national park.
In more urban pursuits, head for the pretty neoclassical centre of L’Aquila (35 minutes), packed with monumental churches, cosy piazzas and elegant colonnaded shopping arcades. The vast cathedral is still being repaired after the earthquake in 2009.
