- Peaceful farm site with spacious pitches and lots of greenery
- Efteling theme park, Tilburg and safari park all within a short drive
- Big barn games room with viewing window into stables, plus gift shop
Wow, wow and, well, wow: what an utterly spectacular farm site this is. Settled among the green and scenic countryside of Brabant, the vibe of this working farm site is peaceful and friendly, with plenty of leafy land on site as well as loads to get you out and about in the local area.
Run expertly by the hospitable Van Rijswijk family, Hoeve De Mertel has modern facilities for comfy days: pack the kids off to the playground before you make for the shaded terrace; have a wander around the farm’s outbuildings, or play a spot of pétanque. There’s space too for energetic littlies who’ll love exploring trails around the farm.
Should a rainy afternoon occur, head indoors to the big barn's huge recreation room for board games and books. A gift shop selling all things sheep- and wool-related and more besides is on site, so souvenirs are sorted... plus you’re within easy reach of the textile hub of Tilburg city.
The fantasy-themed amusements of Efteling theme park and the nature tours at the safari park in Hilvarenbeek are both less than 20 minutes’ drive away, and gentle strolls, brisk hikes and mountain bike rides among the green surroundings of the Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park are a nearby driveable option for more outdoorsy days.

Local attractions
For countryside days, make for the Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park: it’s a mere 15 minutes’ drive away and there’s lots outdoors to do. Rent a mountain bike to traverse the park’s challenging 26-kilometre route, or get in the saddle and explore on horseback – for both you’ll need a license beforehand, which you can order easily online. Otherwise, take to the trails that lead through sandy pine forests and heathland.
Should you fancy something city-based, head into nearby Tilburg; its textile heritage has it known nationally as the Netherlands’s ‘wool city’, and its textile museum – in a building that once housed the operation of one of the area’s biggest employers – showcases this with displays of textile machines ancient, old and new. Afterwards, have an amble around and squeeze in a visit to the city’s museum of contemporary art.
If you’re travelling with kids, then take them to the fantasy-themed rides and attractions of Efteling theme park in Kaatsheuvel, a short drive away. Based on ancient myths and legends, fairytales and folklore, the rides and attractions here comprise enchanted forests, watery log flumes, dark rides and highly captivating park shows for kids and grownups of all ages.
