  • In the grounds of a stunning château in the Périgord Vert
  • Within easy reach of Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park trails
  • Pool complex, slide, swimming and fishing lakes, restaurants and bar
Looking for hols with the royal treatment? Settle in for les vacances fabuleuses at Camping Château le Verdoyer, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Dordogne village of Champs-Romain. This pretty place is in the Périgord Vert area of Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park, so expect plenty of greenery on site – which by the way is on the extensive grounds of a château, with two fishing lakes and a swimming lake for lavishly splashing around in. A pool complex with two heated outdoor pools and a slide will keep kids (and grownups) busy, and there’s an indoor pool too if the weather doesn’t cooperate (or if an hour or so in the hot tub is too good to pass up). A football field, volleyball, and tennis and pétanque courts are to hand for active guests; table tennis for the slightly less active, and bike and car hire for explorers. The site has eats well covered too: start days with the breakfast service or pick up fresh bread and pastries from the small on-site grocery shop (order in advance, please). Have more substantial fare by trying out the Dordogne specialities in the restaurant later on, then wash it all down with a drink at the bar before getting comfy (during high season) for the evening entertainment.

Local attractions

This is a foodie’s haven, with plenty of local delicacies (and some more unusual fare) to try within easy reach… The site’s less than five minutes’ drive from L’Autruche Périgourdine (an ostrich and bison farm where gastro-tourists can pick up ostrich roasts and buffalo steaks), the truffières of Sorges, the Écomusée de la Truffe and shops selling local truffles are about 40 minutes away, and a visit to Thiviers (half an hour from base) could easily include a stop at the Maison du Foie Gras for history, tastings and souvenirs. Stick around Thiviers to visit the rather thematic museum of geese and ducks or to spy out the stunning (but sadly privately owned) Château de Vaucocour, then continue tours of pretty French towns with stops at Saint-Jean-de-Côle (25 minutes away) to explore its château and medieval streets, and at the troglodyte caves half an hour from base in Brantôme, the Venice of Périgord. Active types are well catered for hereabouts too, with treetop courses, laser tag, bike routes and horse riding all handily within 15 minutes, and the Corgnac-sur-l’Îsle vélorail a 40-minute journey away. Need to cool off after all that effort? Head to the village of Saint-Estèphe where there’s a lake for swimming, fishing and sailing.
