- Beachside retreats 10 minutes’ drive from Novalja on Pag Island
- Paški Most bridge 40 minutes’ drive; Old Town Pag 25 minutes
- Well-equipped lodges with terraces and beach or mountain views
Nomad workers, wildlife lovers, beach bunnies, anyone looking for some quiet time… head for Lonely Island Retreat immediately. Found 10 minutes’ drive from Novalja on the sun-soaked island of Pag – known for its distinctive arid landscapes – the accommodation is in fully-equipped lodges with views to the beach or the Velebit Mountains on the Croatian mainland.
Crafted from wood to blend neatly in with the environment, the lodges sleep up to four guests, and each includes an ensuite bathroom, open-plan living space, a kitchen decked out with everything needed to rustle up meals, and a private terrace with comfy seating. Staff members are on hand during the day if you have any queries or problems.
Thanks to the proximity of Novalja, you’re never far away from supermarkets, bakeries, bars and pizzerias – but luckily the town is just far enough away for you to exist on site in a peaceful bubble, surrounded by the Adriatic Sea and fresh air.
One last thing: Pag is relatively easy to get to – no waiting around for ferries for you – as you can drive over the arched Paški Most bridge from the mainland. From there, it’s about 40 minutes’ drive to Lonely Island Retreat.

Local attractions
The lunar-like landscapes of Pag Island are well-worth exploring. Follow the three-hour Life on Mars Trail (named after a certain very famous song) on foot across arid countryside between Novalja (10 minutes’ drive) and Metajna (20 minutes), passing some of the island’s famed dry-stone walls and several spectacular beaches on the way. Stop off for a dip in the sea and a laze in the sun at Ručica (half an hour), backed by barren hills.
To learn about Pag’s backstory, jump in the car and head to the gently crumbling remains of Pag Fortress (40 minutes), built in the 17th century to guard the island against attacks from pirates. And if you like a mystery, pay a visit to Pag Triangle (10 minutes), a weird rock formation believed to have been formed by extraterrestrial adventurers (or – more likely – Neolithic hunter-gatherers).
Another strangely bizarre place is Old Town Pag (25 minutes), once home to 6,000 people but now almost a ghost town since cholera hit the island in 1852. Have a wander round the ruins of the Franciscan monastery and St Mary’s Church, and then head into the modern town of Pag (also 25 minutes) to feast on island lamb in a beachside taverna.
