A trip to north Wales can mean many things… for some it’s all about the action-packed adventures, while for others it’s more of a quiet-time thing, allowing some hours for activities like fishing, photography or art. Whichever of these you’ve got in mind (or perhaps a mix of both), you’ll be in a good location at Glanllyn - Lakeside Caravan and Camping Park. This Gwynedd site is right on the shores of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid), with its own private pebbly stretch of beach where you're welcome to go wild swimming. For an additional fee, grab permits for fishing permit or launching your own paddleboarding, kayaking or windsurfing equipment. Staying at such a strategic spot in the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park also means that you’ll have access to lots more activities in the surroundings too, from hikes and mountain bike outings to gorge walking, ziplining and cave adventures. Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is the big climb, about an hour’s drive away, but there are several other mountains closer by that also offer up good challenges – take a look at Arenig Fawr or Aran Benllyn. Of course that lakeside location is a fabulous one for the serenity-seekers too – the park stretches out over 16 acres of tree-lined level parkland, so there’s plenty of space to soak up those stunning views towards the surrounding hills and mountains. All the essential facilities are covered here, including a launderette, a small food shop, a washing-up area, showers and toilets – plus a play area for any kids you haven’t yet worn out. Barbecue and campfire cooking is permitted, and you’ll be able to pick up wood-fired pizzas on busy weekends.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We stayed for one night at Glanllyn campsite for the first time we have ever been camping, we loved that the camp site was directly on the lake which was perfect for our kayaks, the toilet and shower blocks were a really good size and spotlessly clean, the site was incredibly well kept with a nice little shop at reception which sold all of your necessities. The lady who checked us in was really friendly and helpful pointing us in the right direction for a good breakfast in the morning.

Disliked: Nothing

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: This is such a great location. The views on the lake are stunning. We were there mid week so was nice and quiet and plenty of room. Might be different at the weekend/summer holidays. Staff seemed friendly. Toilets well cleaned and showers hot. Nearby town very cute with a Co-op, Spar, bakeries, ice cream, and tourist shops.

Disliked: Not sure if this was the owner or another guest, but someone left religious paraphernalia all over the women’s bathroom. Made me feel very uncomfortable. Seemed inappropriate for a family campsite. Wouldn’t stop me staying again as I think it was another guest.

From the manager: Thank you for your email. I can ensure you that no religious paraphernalia was left by me or other staff in the women's bathroom, and we saw nothing while cleaning the facilities during your stay.
