  • Two-acre site on a family-run smallholding in Bishops Lydeard
  • Five minutes' walk from West Somerset Railway steam trains
  • Rural site backed by woodland; two pubs within a few minutes' walk
If you like to arrive in style on your holidays, this is certainly a place where you can do just that… Bishops Lydeard Caravan and Camping Site is one of those rare places where you can ride into town on a steam railway, thanks to the West Somerset Railway station a mere five minutes’ walk away. Those planning to ride the rails at a later point, meanwhile, should be pleased to hear that access in a more conventional manner is also straightforward, as the A358 passes fairly nearby. Either way, this is a rather splendid spot with pitches spread across a two-acre field surrounded by protected woodland just on the edge of the village. It’s all been set up in the grounds of the 18th-century Greenway House, a Grade II-listed building that was once part of the adjoining Sandhill Park estate. It’s now a family-run smallholding, so you’ll share the space with ducks, geese and chickens and there are more farm animals to spot in the surrounding fields. As well as being a top spot for train enthusiasts and those in search of farm stays, this place also has much to offer walkers, cyclists and folk travelling with four-legged companions, thanks to the plethora of pathways in the surrounds. And it’s also rather handy that there are two fine pubs and a microbrewery within a few minutes’ walk… Life on site is pretty simple, with a few amenities set up in the form of portable toilets, water taps, a chemical disposal point and a shower room. Barbecues are permitted and there’s ice pack freezing available to keep provisions cool.

Liked: Nice location, quiet and fairly close to the hills and amenities

Disliked: No soap or hot water in the toilet for hand washing. Water for washing dishes was also cold and showers lukewarm.

From the manager: Thanks for your comment. we’re having an exceptionally busy weekend due to the bank holiday and WSR steam rally by us. So I apologise if the soap dispenser had run out in the luxury toilet trailer on the day you visited. The new multi bay shower trailer does however have sinks as well as showers and hot water with complimentary friends of the earth products for washing hair , body and hands. I do appreciate washing up dishes with cold water is not ideal and our plumber is already scheduled for next week to convert the original shower room to an inside washing up room with hot water sink and countertop. Unfortunately due to availability it couldn’t be done before the long weekend. But will be in place for the rest of the season.

Liked: Friendly, informative welcome.Nicely spaced out , level pitches, quiet spot. Complimentary toiletries was a nice touch.

Disliked: Cockeral was very vocal in the morning, but that's what you get if you stay on a small holding.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Really friendly hosts and such a lovely location. Flat pitches, warm showers and proper toilets. Didnt mind the sound of the roosters at all, it kind of fits in with the country location. My wife popped in to say goodbye when we left and had a good chat with the owner. They work really hard to make the site as nice as possible with more improvemnts to follow. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Disliked: Nothing I really disliked. When we stayed the RAF were night flying but that only lasted about 20 or 30 minutes and before midnight.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The site felt like a safe space. The host was friendly. The site is a field with electric hook ups, nice showers (one is level for easy access) and toilets. (I didn't use these facilities but did take a look). I arrived just after a busy Bank Holiday and the site was clean and tidy.

Disliked: There is only one washing up sink and I couldn't get hot water. Not exactly a dislike but no hardstanding available and I was told that some areas may get squishy with lots of rain.

From the manager: Hi Thanks for your review. Glad you liked the new multi bay shower trailer. The original shower room is being converted next week to an inside washing up room with hot water sink.

We are grass based surrounded by our woodland. Some parts get more full sun than others. As we had a lot of heavy rain and it’s still early in the season I like to point out the firmer areas for camping. As the season progresses this isn’t necessary as in general we are pretty firm here.

Hope to see you again
Karen

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Really lovely welcome from the owner who also allowed us to stay longer on the sunday as we were going on the West Somerset Railway and were going to be late leaving the site... I picked the site as its a 5 minute walk from the railway.. We also walked through the village and tried out a local pub.. 10 min walk, a Chinese takeaway and the local Coop all within a short walk... The facilities are great.. Clean and well stocked portaloos and a lovely shower block.. And a washing up area and all shower gel, shampoo, washing up liquid provided.. Quiet site and will definitely revisit sometime in the future

Local attractions

Start local with a stroll up to the village to browse the farm shop, the Quantock Brewery, the tea rooms and the little rural life museum within Bishops Lydeard Mill. Just outside the village (but certainly worth travelling a mile for) is a smart hotel where you can pick up day passes for the swimming pool, spa and nine-hole golf course. If you need an excuse to book in for some pampering, perhaps a few long walks or bike rides would fit the bill? There are plenty of options in the nearby Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, around the Blackdown Hills AONB (20 minutes’ drive) or over in the Exmoor National Park (15 minutes). And one mustn’t forget the coast – the South West Coast Path starts in Minehead (half an hour), and it’s got plenty of beachy activities too. A little inland from Minehead is the splendid Dunster Castle; other fab options for days out nearby might include horse riding (10 minutes from the site) or gentle strolls around Hestercombe House & Gardens (15 minutes).
