  • Diggerland Kent 15 minutes’ drive, and Ightham Mote half an hour
  • Farm tours available; food truck on site serving breakfast and supper
Craving a Kentish camping adventure surrounded by pretty countryside views and lots of animals? Turn your craving into reality and make for Bluebell Barn Farm, an off-grid, pop-up campsite backed by a 25-acre wood (yours to explore freely), accessed by a single-track lane five minutes’ drive/15 minutes' walk from Cobham (a village so historic it appears in Dickens novels). When you’re on site, there’s no need to worry about feeding your brood; a catering van providing coffees, teas and sausage, bacon and egg rolls for breakfast makes an appearance most mornings, and is open again for a few hours in the evenings to provide firm family favourites like burgers, hot dogs and milkshakes. You can also have a wander down to the popular local in Cobham, but if you’d prefer to do the cooking yourself, barbecues are allowed by the pitches. And no need to worry about keeping everyone occupied either. Among the activities available on the campsite is a fun-filled two-hour farmers’ club (at an extra cost), during which time you and the kids can feed pigs, collect eggs from the hens, feed the rare-breed Leicester Longwool sheep and groom a pony as you learn more about farming. If you’re sticking to your eco-credentials and travelling by public transport, the site owners are happy to pick guests up from Meopham railway station (about a 35-minute journey from London) – just please confirm this in advance of your stay.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Feeding the animals. Free fire pit with pitch and bin. Nice forest areas. Owner was friendly and gave info. Part time girl was very sweet to us.

Disliked: No toilet when we arrived. The part time girl had to put it up for us and was only one compostable toilet inside a tent which was dirty. We just went in the forest instead. No running water tap but water was provided in cartons. Owner wasn't there when we left to say bye.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The owners were very friendly and helpful, we loved the animals roaming free and was able to touch them, it was very peaceful and we had the whole field to ourselves.

Disliked: There was a lot of sheep poo everywhere, maybe a good idea when people are coming to just clear a small space for tent to go but it didn’t ruin our time here just a little inconvenience.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The pitch we booked was wonderful. The family running the place were incredibly kind and attentive. We got wood, a fire/bbq pitch, marshmallows, eggs and delicious breakfast + two tickets into the morning farm club for a very reasonable price. I’d be happy to visit again and recommend it 100%!

Local attractions

Should you fancy a day out in the Big Smoke, the fast train from Meopham station (five minutes’ drive) takes 35 minutes into London Victoria; you can treat the kids to the Crown Jewels on display in the Tower of London, take in the dinosaur skeletons at the Natural History Museum or spot pelicans and parrots living in St James’ Park. The kids will likely also enjoy a day churning up mud and driving massive machines at Diggerland Kent (15 minutes), touring historic craft at The Historic Dockyard Chatham (20 minutes) or letting off steam on the bike tracks at Cyclopark (10 minutes). Kent's beaches aren't far off either – it's about a half-hour drive to the Isle of Sheppey, or 40 minutes to Whitstable. When it’s time for you to choose your day’s itinerary, visit the gorgeous, moated 14th-century National Trust-owned Ightham Mote (half an hour), which also has 500 acres of parkland to explore (dogs are welcome too). Further cultural stops could include Penshurst Place and Gardens (45 minutes), Churchill’s former stately home at Chartwell (50 minutes) and the Tudor artworks at Hever Castle and Gardens (also 50 minutes). Closer to home, it's a two-minute walk to an 80-acre community nature reserve.
