  • Gravel pitches at an equestrian centre 10 minutes’ walk from the coast
  • Portimão 15 minutes’ drive; Ria Formosa Nature Park one hour
  • Views of the ocean and the sunset; horse-riding excursions; bike hire
What’s better than a luxury site in southern Portugal with panoramic views of the Gulf of Cadiz? Simple: a luxury site with all the benefits mentioned above – plus horses. Part of an equestrian centre, peaceful Casa Lusitana sits on a hill between Ferragudo and Carvoeiro (about five minutes’ drive to both), just over half a kilometre (call it a 10-minute walk) from the stunning cliff-fringed beaches of the Algarve coast, including Praia da Afurada and Praia do Mato. Gravel pitches come with wide vistas of vegetation-covered hills gently descending to the ocean – plus heart-stopping sunset views. And arguably the most spectacular way to experience both the cliffs and the sunset is to go on a guided excursion riding one of the site’s friendly horses. If you prefer two wheels to four legs, it’s possible to hire a bicycle; you should be able to reach the nearest beaches in about five minutes, and sandy stretches such as Praia dos Caneiros, with its off-shore stack, and sheltered Praia Grande, with its child-friendly shallow waters, in about 10 minutes. And then there are splendid hiking paths, such as the coastal Trail of Headlands, which links Ferragudo and Carvoeiro along clifftops where you might spot cormorants and egrets. A hot-water shower after a day spent swimming, canoeing, surfing or hiking… and you are ready for dinner, whether you choose to fire up the barbecue (the nearest supermarket is in Sesmarias, on the outskirts of Carvoeiro) and devour your food on site, while watching the sun set over the ocean, or head into Ferragudo for a traditional seafood meal.

Local attractions

Dotted with palm trees and skirted by a cycle path, the Ribeirinha area of Portimão (15 minutes’ drive) stretches along the Arade River. Follow it all the way to the Museu de Portimão, which houses displays on local history, from Roman artefacts to shipbuilding items. At the foot of the Serra de Monchique mountains, the city of Silves (20 minutes) is known for the distinctive red-sandstone bulk of the crenellated Castelo de Silves, built during the country’s Muslim rule in the 12th century. The Gothic cathedral was built on a former mosque dating from the same period. The Ria Formosa Nature Park (one hour), just outside Faro, includes sandy beaches fringed by dunes, barrier islands and wetlands. Such diversity of habitats ensures a varied range of birdlife, such as egrets, curlews and storks.
