La Rigatella

- Peaceful pitches at a Lazio site five minutes' drive from Moricone
- An hour's drive to central Rome; rural walking trails close by
- Grounds shared with farm animals and abundant gardens
So… you fancy a trip to Rome, but you’d also quite like a rural break? Here’s your solution – a stay at La Rigatella, five minutes' drive away from Moricone, a small village in the Tiber Valley, 296 metres above sea level and an hour's drive from the capital.
Your surroundings are thoroughly rural here, so you’ll be able to have a lovely peaceful break, perhaps heading out for walks and bike rides, exploring little villages and seeking out nice places to sample local food and drink.
And then, when you feel the call of the big city, you can head into Rome for time spent taking in all the attractions – getting right into the centre will take you around a hour, but it’s likely to be a much less stressful journey if you park in the outskirts (half an hour) and take a train.
After your urban day or countryside wander, it’s back to base, where pitches are in the grounds of an old farmhouse and surrounded by abundant gardens (look out for tomatoes, cherries, courgettes, peaches and other produce depending on the season). The grounds are also home to various farm animals including goats, ponies and chickens, and there’s a pond full of fish – all mightily bucolic.
The place is completely fenced, so it’s nicely safe and secure, and there's a small swimming pool where you can cool off in summer. Barbecues and picnic tables are provided for outdoor eats, and guests have access to a water supply and solar-powered electric supply. As well as outdoor chemical toilets there's a bathroom in the farmhouse with hot water.

Local attractions
Rome (half an hour to the outskirts) is, of course, the big day out around here – first-timers will want to see all the major sights (Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, St Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel, Castel Sant’Angelo, Villa Borghese…) but there's plenty to enjoy even if you’ve visited several times before.
If you don’t want to go all the way to Rome for your history fix, you can stay closer to home and take shorter trips: in the main square of Moricone (five minutes' drive) stands Palazzo Baronale, built in the 17th century and also known as Castello Savelli, housing opulent artwork and interiors. Visit the ruins of Castiglione (Castrum Castillonis) (20 minutes) and the Via Nomentum Eretum (25 minutes), which often holds tours and special events as well.
And how about soaking up some of the local scenery? The site is in the Monti Lucretili regional natural park, where there are lots of lovely trails to follow. If you’ve ended up with sore muscles after your walk, soothe them with a soak in the thermal pools at Terme Sabine di Cretone (10 minutes).
