  • Scenic 6,000-acre nature retreat in the Blue Mountains foothills
  • Under an hour and half’s drive from Katoomba, Mudgee and Bathurst
  • River area; on-park activities like horse-riding and canoe hire
With 6,000 acres to its name, Turon Gates really does take ‘bush getaway’ to the next level. Set in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, an hour and a half’s drive away from the tourist town of Katoomba and 20 minutes from little Capertee, it is in a properly peaceful setting. The surrounding Turon Valley, famed for birdwatching, forms the mountainous backdrop. This is the Australian bush, so there’s lots of wildlife around the site, whether it’s kangaroos, wombats, platypus, echidnas, possums or bush lizards. Many animals come to drink at the river; the site has a seven-mile stretch with very clear water. Hire a canoe or bring your own kayak or canoe to get out onto the river, or come prepared with a fishing license and fly rod to try your luck at catching trout and carp (during the fishing season). Some guests also like to get stuck into activities like horse-riding along the river, bushwalking or mountain biking along the firetrails. However, if you’d rather take it easy, maybe it’s time to write, paint the scenery or try some other lighter activities like swimming in the river, gold panning, roasting something on the fire or stargazing. The nearest village to Turon Gates is Capertee, 20 minutes’ drive away, which has a bar, a petrol station selling some groceries and a train station. Sydney CBD is two hours and 50 minutes’ drive away. It’s an hour and 15 minutes’ drive to Mudgee, known for its wineries, and an hour and 20 minutes to Bathurst, set in what’s affectionately known as ‘Gold Country’.

Local attractions

Day trip ideas from Turon Gates are pretty nice sounding: take a look at the local country towns or track down somewhere to go gold panning in 'Gold Country’. Bathurst (an hour and 20 minutes’ drive) is home to the Mount Panorama Motor Racing Circuit – check for events – as well as museums about the racing, the rail and fossils, an art gallery and the historic Abercrombie House built in the 1870s. Mudgee (an hour and 10 minutes), on the other hand, has excellent vineyards and cellar doors for a day of tastings. For a day out on the trails, Genowlan Mountain (50 minutes), the Gardens of Stone National Park (45 minutes), the Capertee Valley and the Wollemi National Park (under two hours) should make some stunning picks. Wollemi National Park has Wollemi pines, one of the world's oldest and rarest trees. Finally, round off your getaway with a drive to Katoomba (an hour and a half), where the Three Sisters, the Giant Stairway and cable cars have gorgeous views over the Jamison Valley. There are plenty of hiking paths in the area, like the Federal Pass, the Leura Cascades and the Grand Canyon.
