  • Dog-friendly stay on a dairy farm near the Isle of Whithorn
  • A 10-minute drive from Garlieston and Galloway House Gardens
  • Kids’ play area and animals such as pygmy goats and Shetland ponies
Hole down in a canvas hideaway modelled on a turn-of-the-century farmhouse… Feather Down – Balnab Farm is a Scottish edition of the Feather Down farm stable, a brand of back to basics, wifi- and electricity-free stays on farms across the UK. This particular place is dog- and family-friendly, based on a dairy farm just five minutes’ drive from the Isle of Whithorn on the Scottish coast (which is a peaceful fishing village rivalling those in Cornwall, just with way less people). Farmers Chloe and Gavin Vance and their eight children opened this place with Feather Down in 2021. It’s not their first Scottish site, but it’s the most southerly, just a couple of miles from the Solway Firth. It’s a go-to for families, with a play area kitted out with climbing, water play areas and straw bales at the centre of the encampment. The farm also has dairy calves, pygmy goats, Shetland ponies and piglets, all within view of the canvas hideaway. Measuring nearly 500 square feet, the canvas hideaway has a cosy interior with all manners of nooks and crannies to hide out in. Even better, the tent expands in size as soon as you open up the front canopy. Everything you might think of has been included: flushing toilets, a private shower, comfy beds (sleeping a family up to six) and a roomy living area. It’s lit up by candles and oil lamps and heated by a woodburning stove (which can also be used for cooking). Everything that is, apart from electricity and wifi. This is the place to go to get a glimpse of a simpler way of life free from gadgets.
