When is a farm not a farm? When it is a micro-farm, of course. Or Domaine de la Baleine Bleue to be precise, which is a sustainably run glampsite with a small menagerie on a Charente-Maritime estate 10 minutes’ drive from the rural village of La Clotte.
Accommodation is in nattily fitted out, solar-powered eco-lodges with well-equipped kitchens, plenty of space in the living and dining areas for all the family, two bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms with powerful showers. Outside, you have south-facing views over the whale-shaped lake to admire from your shaded, private terrace, and the chance to watch the livestock as they have a free-range potter about the estate.
As well as having around 15 acres of naturally preserved land to roam, you can meet the abundance of animals, from goats and sheep to donkeys and rabbits, or birds including swans, hens and strutting peacocks, so there’s never a dull moment on site. If you fancy, give the owner a hand around the farm at feeding time, try casting a few lines into the pond for fish, take out the rowing boat for a paddle, or simply chill on your terrace and soak up the peace and solitude.
Buy seasonal vegetables, fruit and eggs produced on site to pep up your suppers, and local produce such as organic ice cream and craft beers are sometimes available too.

Local attractions
If you’d prefer to keep your eco-footprint to a minimum, hang out on site to participate in free permaculture workshops on sustainable farming, market gardening or tree pruning. Alternatively, have a wander on foot or by bike in the dense woodland surrounding Domaine de la Baleine Bleue, where you might get to see deer flitting through the trees.
Further afield, explore the subterranean Church of St-Jean, carved out of solid rock below the pretty village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (35 minutes’ drive), or whisk the kids out onto the River Dronne by canoe. In lovely Jonzac (45 minutes), take a guided tour of centuries of history at the landmark château, and then cool off with a dip in the lake at Les Antilles de Jonzac, where you can also try paddleboarding or run around under the splash fountains with your kids.
Wine lovers may care to stock up on fine vintages from the grand cru vineyards around Saint-Émilion (40 minutes’ drive), or perhaps head into Bordeaux (90 minutes) for a day learning about wine cultivation at the futuristic Cité du Vin, followed with a blow-out supper accompanied by local wines on Place du Marché des Chartrons.
