Camping in the pond field

  • Family-run farm campsite 20 minutes' walk from Hever Castle
  • Chiddingstone and Penshurst Place within a 10-minute drive
  • On-site carp and roach fishing available; firewood for sale
Camping in Kent is a fine option indeed, whether you're after family-friendly breaks in the Garden of England, wine-tasting vineyard voyages or just a quiet rural break within easy reach of London. Hever Camping, a family-run site half a mile from the small village of Markbeech, makes an excellent base for all three – and with a good dose of history thrown in too… Managed by sisters Sarah and Gina, the farm where Hever Camping is based has been in the hands of the same family for over 100 years, meaning your hosts are very knowledgeable about the local area. Originally a dairy farm attached to the Hever Castle estate, the cows are now long gone – but the grand grounds of the castle and its gardens are easily accessed on foot in around 20 minutes. Hever Camping is split into two parts – Farm Field, with toilets and washing-up area (with hot water) and the more remote Pond Field, with toilets and cold water. The farm is home to a woodland, a pond, trees that are great for climbing and a Wendy house for the kids. On-site angling is available, with likely catches including carp and roach. Firewood is sold here too (subject to availability). Nearby off-site amenities include Markbeech's pub and farm shop (10 minutes' walk from the site gates) and Cowden railway station (20 minutes), where direct trains can take you to London Bridge in as little as 45 minutes.

Pond field unpowered grass campervan site

Liked: A big open field where you can choose your site to pitch. Several showers, located in the field. A large facilities unit that is clean and well maintained, located in the yard next to the field. Wheeler's Wagon Cafe, which has food and drink available 7.30-5.30 - great value, decent coffee. The frappes and milkshakes are particularly good! The cafe is open to the public and locals use it - a good sign! Owners are friendly and helpful and there is a phone number posted for out of hours emergencies. The gate is locked at night and there is an access code you are given on arrival. Arrival time is earlier than many sites so lots of time to get set up and still have time to go out. Departure time is 11am, but can be flexible by arrangement. I felt safe as a solo female - I had booked Pond Field but it was empty, so they let me move my booking to Farm Field.
Fire pits and picnic tables are available to use around the field, logs and kindling can be bought at the cafe for a reasonable price.
The whole site is dog friendly, and there is a kids' play area in the field. Tent campers can park next to their tent.
I really enjoyed my mid-week break as there were very few other campers (between Easter holidays and May Bank Holiday) so it was peaceful and nearest neighbours were a couple of hundred yards away!!

Disliked: Some days there are planes overhead every few minutes, but not every day. Depends on Gatwick's approach vector that day. Some are quite low. Not an issue if you are able to filter noises out, but may be intrusive if you want peace and quiet. It didn't bother me, and it was only 1 day out of 3, but previous reviews have mentioned it.

Farm field unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: The field has a lovely old-style atmosphere that we loved. The showers were really hot and didn't switch of until you wanted them to. The owner, Sarah, was helpful and friendly, running a wonderful cafe on-site that provided excellent food. Situated in a fabulous location we found the local pub to be a gem too.

Pond field unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: The site was large with multiple fields. pond fields located a good walk through the woods. amazing area of Beauty all around

Disliked: can only speak for one location but the toilets felt the most crammed and tight space. They were not bad but somehow compared to other places it felt more tight. You could perhaps hear every action in the next cubicle. Bring some earplugs if your shy

Pond field unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: A peaceful and well-maintained site, perfect for a relaxing countryside getaway. The atmosphere is quiet and laid-back. All the essential facilities are available and kept clean, including showers, toilets, and washing-up areas, which make camping here comfortable and convenient.
One of the standout features is the charming little playground that keeps the children happily entertained while parents enjoy the surrounding tranquility.
The location is absolutely fantastic—nestled in the beautiful Kent countryside, it's an excellent base for exploring historic sites. Hever Castle is just a short drive away, along with other nearby castles and stately homes. There are also plenty of forest paths and country walks in the area, offering opportunities for nature lovers and walkers to explore scenic trails.
Overall, Hever Camping is a hidden gem for those who appreciate nature, history, and a quiet place to stay. We've been there a few times and it's our go-to place for a spontaneous weekend camping for a night or two.

Farm field unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Quiet, big, empty, friendly. Lots of wildlife. Especially woodpeckers in the adjoining woods. Interesting old farm machinery and a jet engine (I think)!! Contrary to some previous reviews I found no excessive noise at all from Gatwick. Not sure what they're talking about.

Disliked: Cold where we were - but that can hardly be blamed on the owners. I should have looked more closely at where was likely to get most sun during the day before pitching. Big enough place to choose from.

Pond field unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Loved the peace & quiet in the pond field. Good site for nature lovers. Great showers in the farm field, good water pressure, nice and hot and clean.
Toilet block in pond field is a bit dated but always clean and does the job. Free fire pit and cheap bag of wood. Overall this site is great value for money, I will definitely be visiting again.

Local attractions

First port of call around these parts simply has to be the excellent Hever Castle (20 minutes' walk or five minutes' drive): the childhood home of Anne Boleyn has plenty of attractions to keep you busy for a full day out, including a water maze, playgrounds and a fab series of summer events including things like jousting tournaments and open-air theatre shows. For a bit more on the local history front, head to Chartwell (15 minutes' drive), a long-term haunt of Winston Churchill, or to Penshurst Place (10 minutes), where you can tour the medieval manor or trot around the estate's 100 acres, taking in the lakes, adventure playground and woodland trails along the way. More of the past is on display in Chiddingstone (five minutes), a well-preserved Tudor village managed by the National Trust. Need something to keep the kids entertained? Edenbridge (10 minutes) has a well-maintained public leisure centre nearby if they've got excess energy to burn off, while trips to top local theme parks like Diggerland Kent (55 minutes) or zoos like the UK Owl and Raptor Centre (20 minutes) could also be in the offing.
