  • Peaceful Yorkshire Dales site with views of Pen-y-Ghent
  • A 15-minute drive from Settle; steam train rides pass the site
  • Dog-friendly site within walking distance of three country pubs
Well, isn’t this a really rather fine rural setting – on the banks of the River Ribble and within easy rambling distance of restorative pints at one of Horton-in-Ribblesdale’s three country pubs: how fab... Cragg Hill Farm is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the views from this peaceful place won’t let you forget that for even a sec. Gaze in one direction and you'll hopefully see Pen-y-Ghent towering over the site; turn the other way and you might just catch a glimpse of the Settle-Carlisle Railway trains wending their way through the scenic surrounds. Settle is a 15-minute drive to the south; as well as being the launch point for train rides, it’s also a good place to source supermarket supplies (or have a swim or a game of golf if you’re shunning such mundanities as shopping). For other days out, it’s recommended you look not much further than roaming around the Yorkshire Dales – although you could also consider hitting the coast at Morecambe, an hour’s drive away, if you’re yearning for a bit of sea air. Back at the farm, life is pretty laidback, with no noisome ents to interfere with the peace, just toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area to keep you and your kit clean.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Quiet, able to pitch up where you wanted so spacious pitches, mains fed water source, lovely location

Disliked: Toilets were often in a bad state due to other visitors not being able to urinate in the correct areas for some reason, lights didn’t work in the toilets so was hard to see once door was shut

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Spacious site between the river and the railway. Clean, proper toilets with washbasins and other standpipes around the site for drinking water. Excellent base for numerous walks, particularly Pen-y-Ghent and the Yorkshire 3 Peaks.

Disliked: Nothing, really. Because the pitches weren't marked it was all a bit random as to where to set up and there wasn't a lot of shelter in the middle of the camping fields when it was windy.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Lovely clean site. Good quality ground for pitching. No pitch sizes which was great for us as we met with friends so wanted a space big enough for both tents together.
Easy to find. Toilets and shower block all clean and toilets stocked with toilet rolls. The couple who own it very friendly and welcoming. For the price can not complain. And will be booking again!

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Big, clean campsite. Plenty of toilet blocks. All facilities well looked after. Nice grass. Few hiking walking routes around. Coffee shops in the village.

Disliked: No lights in one block of toilets. When cold taking shower is a challenge.

Liked: Absolutely stunning place to camp! Back to basics campsite with just all I needed.
Very welcoming owner lady at reception, you can choose your pitch and so enjoy peace and quiet. Stunning views of Pen-y-Ghent, walks along the river to both directions from the campsite.
Toilets very clean and smelling nice, no lights there so you need a torch, clean showers and washing up area. Drinking water points and recycling bins around, pitches well maintained. Campsite was full on Saturday night yet so very quiet you wouldn't notice there's plenty of people around! It's amazing there's no street lights around, can't hear the road traffic and even the train line right above the campsite adds to experience with occasionally passing trains 😃
It was my first visit for 2 nights there and I'm in love with the place! Will be definitely coming back and already recommended to my friends.
Thank you for a magical experience 😊

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Second time visiting and just as lovely as we remember. Last time we came in 2020 and it was very busy. This time it was much quieter. Perfect for 3 Peaks and only a 15 min walk to train station for Settle and Carlisle Line.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

This is a mighty fine part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to be based in, as it’s within easy reach of several fab sights. Malham Cove and Malham Tarn, half an hour away by car, combine to make an excellent day’s walk; the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (25 minutes’ drive) is another that’s worth walking. If it’s not walking weather, get underground at White Scar Cave (20 minutes) or Ingleborough Cave (35 minutes). Not active enough? Those for whom Pen-y-Ghent is not so much scenery as a challenge can set out from the site for the climb to the 694-metre peak. Follow up by scaling slightly taller Ingleborough (also accessible on foot from the farm) and taller-still Whernside (15 minutes’ drive) to tick Yorkshire’s Three Peaks Challenge off your bucket list. You may like a little sit down after all that (or instead…) and a fine place for that is in a seat on the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which you can board at the nearest station a mile away in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Even if you’re not up for the ride, you may like to take in the view of the Ribblehead Viaduct (15 minutes), famed for many as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express.
