Locarno, it’s widely claimed, is the sunniest place in all of Switzerland, with a fairly mighty 2,300 sunlit hours per year. It’s got a gorgeous setting on the banks of Lake Maggiore too, with palm trees on the promenade, a Renaissance Old Town and the foothills of the Alps as a handsome backdrop: all this combines rather fably, as you may imagine, to make a splendid place for your Swiss hol…? For easy access to both urban time and fresh-air frolics, make the 15-minute drive from the town to settle at Campeggio Isola, on the banks of the Ticino river in the little village of Cugnasco. From here it’s a cinch to head out for a hike, hit the cycle path that starts 50 metres away (hiring bikes from site if you wish) or get into mountain- or lake-based activities. When not involved with metropolis or mountainous meanderings, you’ve got a top spot back at base: take swims in the outdoor pool, play games of table tennis, curl up in front of the TV or just stretch out on a sun lounger while the bambini have fun at the playground. Eats are easily sorted too: head to the restaurant to take your pick from the Italian-inspired menu or pore over the choices of pizza to take away. You may well elect to dine (or drink) in on those evenings in high season when there’s live music, tending to morph into dancing after a vino or two.

Get out into that fresh mountain air by hitting the hiking trails around the lake or up into the Alpine foothills, or by taking the Bellinzona-Locarno cycle path 50 metres from the site to the two nearest towns and further trails. Or might you prefer to get your adrenaline boost from an abseiling or canyoning excursion? Arrange these at the adventure centre five minutes away, along with family-friendly or more advanced canoe trips. You can also arrange scuba diving trips in Locarno if you fancy seeing what lurks below the surface of gorgeous Lake Maggiore. Heading away from the lake, another recommended visit is to Bellinzona, 15 minutes by car (or half an hour or so by bike), to visit the three UNESCO-listed medieval castles.
