Stays at this zippy Zeeland site are pretty sure to include many a marvellous moment – Camping Scheldeoord has oodles of family-friendly leisure options, is a mere 100 metres from the beach and has two pools for swims indoors and out. Pretty neat, huh? Fancy strolling along the calm waters of the Westerschelde and watching the ships go by? This park is right on the coast, so fab vistas are pretty much guaranteed (rumour has it they're particularly swell at the site's waterfront bar and brasserie). Of course, not everything need be so serene on your seaside hols – kids, dogs and young-at-heart grownups can tear around the beach, squelch through nearby mudflats or hunt for crabs and other critters in the rockpools. This place makes it easy to get stuck in and do your thing, whether that be renting bikes and pedalling through country lanes, taking the kids to the indoor soft play zone or boarding Camping Scheldeoord's sturdy RIB and voyaging out in search of seals. There's also a wide range of sports pitches here. Think you’re a pro at pétanque? Keep an eye out for site-organised tournaments in the high season. Barbecues are welcome here. Need to refill the coolbox? Head to the site's nifty food shop for goodies and holiday essentials, or drive 10 minutes to the closest big supermarket.

Llocs d'interès

This peaceful southern slice of Zeeland has a landscape of beaches, orchards and pretty polders (that's fields reclaimed from the sea, in case you didn't know). It's also pretty flat, which makes it a breeze to get out and about on two wheels. For a pleasant cycle or stroll in the local area, head inland to the small village of Baarland (five minutes' drive), where there are a handful of friendly local cafés, a handsome old church and the remains of a medieval castle. This family-friendly site has plenty of kid-pleasing options nearby, including Berkenhof zoo (10 minutes), the Goes-Borsele Steam Railway (20 minutes) and Mini Mundi theme park (30 minutes). Good news if urban day trips are your thing – several of the Low Countries' must-see cities are visitable if you make Camping Scheldeoord your base. Historic Middelburg (35 minutes) is the most sizeable town in Zeeland and full of canals and Gothic architecture and well worth a trip. Don't rule out cross-border jaunts into Belgium, either: the city lights of Antwerp are about an hour away and gorgeous Ghent around an hour and a quarter.
