Squirreling away all those holiday days for when you really need them? Quit hoarding and scurry your fluffy tail along to Camping Municipal Les Écureuils, a family-friendly glampsite in the Rhône-Alpes village of Recoubeau-Jansac, 10 minutes’ drive from the old Roman city of Die.
In the Drôme region under 10 minutes from the edge of Vercors Regional Natural Park, this is a particularly scenic spot to settle down in for les hols. Don’t be in a hurry to start exploring – spend some time on site, playing pétanque or basking in the peace and quiet of a private terrace while taking in the Vercors mountain views in the distance.
Get closer to all that fab scenery by following one of the hiking or mountain biking trails that leave straight from the site, or settle in behind the wheel for lengthier jaunts to reach stunning waterfalls and those towering mountains. More of a river rat? See it all from a different perspective by getting out on the Drôme for canoeing, kayaking or rafting.
If days nearer to the site are in demand, there’s a public pool in the village (discounted entry for guests) for cooling off during high season, while the swimmable natural pools in the river should entice in other months. Dry off with strolls around the village, getting a café at the café, and stocking up on supplies in the grocery store for cooking back at base.

Fancy a taste of France? Have a sup of du vin by sipping on Clairette at La Cave de Die Jaillance, 15 minutes’ drive from the site, or sniff out the lavender 20 minutes from base at Distillerie des 4 Vallées, where you can buy essential oil and soap among other scented souvenirs.
Have more family-friendly days at Arbo’Magic five minutes away, where the kids can swing between trees, explore the treehouses and zip along giant slides, or take things up a notch with treetop rope courses and zippy ziplines at Die’s Acro’parc Aventure.
Getting in touch with nature is a cinch hereabouts too: flit along to Le Jardin des Découvertes, where a kaleidoscope of exotic butterflies dances among the ferns and flowers, or buzz lazily over to Miellerie l’Abeille du Vercors to learn how to be a beekeeper.
If time can be made for lengthier wanders, make a beeline for the stunning Cirque d’Archiane half an hour away on the other side of the pretty village of Châtillon-en-Diois. Or make the trek nearly an hour away to Vassieux-en-Vercors (known for its help to the World War II French Resistance) for the Resistance memorial museum and, a little further on, a guided tour of la Grotte de la Draye Blanche.
