Get ready to get sandy: there's direct access to a sandy beach from Camping La Combe à l'Eau, a seaside site sheltered by sand dunes and a pine forest, on the famed and scenic Charente-Maritime island of Île de Ré.
Swim, sunbathe and fish from here, or hire a bike a kilometre away to explore the island's network of cycling trails; all of Île de Ré is suitable for cycling so get ready to get on two wheels too. Boat trips, spas, watersports, salt marshes, horse riding and more spectacular beaches are all easily reached from the site's Ars-en-Ré setting; off the island, it's less than an hour's drive from your beach base to reach La Rochelle.
La Combe à l'Eau is a semi-shaded site, 150 metres from the beach and with fishing a minute's walk away. If you ever emerge from the water, sand or your angling spot, there's a bowling alley and playground on site to keep all ages amused, and a barbecue and picnic area to keep all fed and watered. Can't be bothered even doing that on your fab French island beach hol? There's a restaurant on site too.
Fresh bread is available daily.

What a splendid region the Île de Ré is for cycling, along mostly flat roads to seaside villages, markets and active options including equestrian and watersports centres.
Local commune Ars-en-Ré has a daily market and harbour to wander around, as well as a miniature golf course and tennis courts. Also take a look at the famed wall town of Saint-Martin-de-Ré (20 minutes' drive), where there are colourful buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, a church with a belltower to climb for first-rate views over the town and out to sea, and 12 kilometres of fortifications that along with 11 other fortified towns around France make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The harbour makes a splendid spot to potter around here, as does that of neighbouring La Flotte.
For more beaches, have days at Conche des Baleines and Gros Jonc, 10 and 20 minutes from the site, or head to Grenettes (25 minutes) for surfing and surf lessons.
