If a family-friendly stay in France is on the cards, level up on both location and activities by parking yourself at the tree-lined Camping Les Alouettes. This place with a couple of pools is around 10 minutes' drive from the seaside town of Brétignolles-sur-Mer and lovely Vendée beaches like Plage du Marais Girard. A free shuttle will whizz you to the sands between Monday to Friday in the summer months, and Saturdays and Sundays (or any other day you choose) can be spent revelling in the refinement of the site’s wellness area with its infrared sauna. While adults steam, kids can cavort at the mini club (entertainment’s also on hand for teens and adults, including evening shows during July and August). Guests of all ages can plunge into the swimming pool or set their sights on sporting activities. To keep you fully fed ahead of nights dancing at the club or lengthy bingo sessions, a restaurant – serving local classics like moules et frites – and a pizzeria make up the meal options. Basic groceries are for sale on site too (as well as postcards if you want to boast to those at home about how well your hol’s going…). A wider choice of produce is available at supermarkets in Brétignolles-sur-Mer and the popular town of Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, 15 minutes away. Camping Les Alouettes has a laundry area, free board games and books to borrow. Bikes are available for rent – ask to hire one and it’ll be brought right to the site for you.

For those who want to get wet, paddleboarding and surf lessons are at Plage des Granges beach (15 minutes away). Animal-themed antics are at Zoo des Sables (25 minutes) and bee-farm frolics in La Folie De Finfarine (35 minutes). To goggle at sea creatures after meeting and greeting all those land-based critters, Aquarium de Vendée is 30 minutes away. Take to the water yourself on the slides of O'Gliss Park (45 minutes) or keep the kids dry while thrill-seeking at Le Château des Aventuriers amusement park (40 minutes). For a full day out at one of France’s top theme parks, the historically inspired Puy du Fou is just over an hour away.
