If you can’t quite picture where that is, here’s a useful hint: you’re in the Burgundy region (Beaune and Meursault are about one hour and 20 minutes away to the east), which means you can make vinous (and gastronomic) delights the central elements of your holiday.
Accommodation at the site, which promotes itself as a ‘residential leisure park’, comes in the shape of wooden lodges. They occupy a peaceful forested area where you will find plenty to keep yourself – and the kids – occupied: from a playground and table tennis to a pétanque court and a collection of board games.
Then there’s the surrounding countryside, which you can explore on foot or on two wheels. Bike rental is available on site, and it’s also possible to hire canoes and paddleboards to glide on the waters of the lake. A 15-minute drive takes you to an activity centre where you can have a go at sailing and windsurfing.
Other bodies of water within the Morvan reserve include Lac de Pannecière (half an hour’s drive), which is popular with birdwatchers (thanks to the Observatoire Ornithologique de Montigny, where you might spot coots, herons and ducks) and anglers.
In addition to a barbecue area, the site comes with a restaurant serving breakfasts, sharing platters and traditional regional dishes, plus Sunday brunch.

Interesting sites within the Parc naturel régional du Morvan include the Cascade du Saut de Gouloux waterfalls (20 minutes’ drive), deep into a forest dotted with the ruins of ancient mills. Or take a hike up to observation points like the Panorama du Calvaire (25 minutes) and the Rocher de la Pérouse (35 minutes).
This forested area was at the forefront of the French Resistance movement during World War II. To learn more about this period of German occupation, head to Saint-Brisson (25 minutes), where the Museum of the Resistance displays maps, uniforms and weapons. Part of the museum, the moving Cimetière franco-britannique de Coeuzon, houses the remains of World War II freedom fighters.
In Beaune is a former hospital with an extravagantly tiled roof, the Hôtel-Dieu - Hospices de Beaune, which dates from the 15th century and has now been turned into a wine estate. Check out the historic collection of tapestries in the Basilica of Our Lady, then stroll around this pretty town stopping at wine bars to sample the local Burgundies.
